Block Print Collage

This collage was made by using 6 different color applications of my
block print and a variety of photos i found on the Internet. The
photos all depict protest, especially recent Occupy protests, and
relate to the message found in the block print of anarchy and freedom.
I attempted to use a variety of colors, so overall the collage "has a
lot going on". I did this to convery a sense of confusion and choas in
the viewer, feelings that should be associated with the protests.

Block Print Collage

2-Point Perspective Painting

This is painting made from two perspectives--one at each horizontal
end in the middle--of two blocks of a commerial area near the beach.
The viewer is looking from across the intersection, with the corner of
the two streets in the middle. I used an elementary color scale; i
only used the colors red, blue and yellow, as well as mixing those
colors with either black or white to create different shades. It's
hard to see from just the picture, but i tried experimenting with a
variety of textures and different brushstrokes. The small sand area on
the right side is rough, whereas the clouds in the sky are light.

Book Page #1

This is the first of 4 book page designs. I used random ripped-out
pages from the book Lord of the Flies, and then created a new story or
certain imagery by painting, coloring, or glueing over all of the
other words. The words you see are the ones i kept. In this one, i
used pencil, sharpie and prismacolor markers to draw an orc. The orc
is a visual representation of the words selected from the page, such
as "savage". I used bright colors to highlight an emphasize certain
qualities, like how the orange really makes the creature's eyes stand
out. The only aspect of this page i don't think turned out well is the
black background, especially towards the bottom of the page. It's very
streaked and linear due to the low amount of ink in the marker.

This book page shows a white dove flying admist a black background.
The dove is a common symbol for freedom, and accurately represents the
story in the words i selected. I used a low amount of paint and harsh,
quick brushstrokes to create the black background, and contrasted that
texture with the smooth surface of the dove.

Book Page #3

The short story i created with this book page states that a "red rock"
is flying toward the earth, and a mysterious heartbeat is pounding
somewhere because of the imminent collision. Using paint, i mixed
basic colors with white and black to create unique shades. The red
rock is actually a darker red, and the green grass is slightly darker
than normal green. I also used very hard brushtrokes to create a rough
texture on the rock, and very light, cross-linear strokes to create
the texture of the grass.

This is a book page i created using repitition of a single photo of
face masks. In the space in the middle between photos, the words read
"He was safe from shame or self-consciousness behind the mask of his
paint". Thus, the painted masks covering the page give a visual of the
statement. In hindsight, i wish i had used a variety of masks to
create a collage of photos, instead of just printing multiple copies
of one.
